  1.  MAGNARAM VERSION 2 README FILE FOR WINDOWS 95 USERS
  2.  
  3.  This file includes tips to help you get the most out of MagnaRAM.  For
  4.  that reason alone, it is worthwhile reading! It also contains
  5.  last-minute information that did not make it into the manual and a
  6.  few corrections to the manual. If you want to print this file for
  7.  future reference, be sure you are in the MagnaRAM directory and type
  8.  "COPY READ.ME PRN:" at the DOS prompt.  Alternatively, you may
  9.  print this file from the Windows Notepad by clicking on File, then
  10.  Print.

  12.  Restrictions on the MagnaRAM directory
  13.  MagnaRAM and 'Quick Start' programs
  14.  If your locks up after MagnaRAM is installed
  15.  If your system seems to slow down after MagnaRAM is installed
  16.  If MagnaRAM seems to have no effect on your system
  17.  Applications that do not have enough memory with MagnaRAM installed
  18.

  20.  RESTRICTIONS ON THE MAGNARAM DIRECTORY
  21.  ======================================
  22.  
  23.  MagnaRAM must not be installed in a folder (directory) that uses the
  24.  Windows 95 long file name conventions, because Windows' long file name
  25.  support is not available at the time that MagnaRAM loads. The folder
  26.  in which you install MagnaRAM must have a name of eight characters or
  27.  fewer, must have an extension of three characters or fewer, and must
  28.  not contain more than one period, and must not contain spaces.
  29.  If MagnaRAM is stored in a folder below the root directory, all folders
  30.  above it must adhere to these rules as well.

  32.  Examples:
  33.  
  34.  MagnaRAM cannot be installed in these folders:
  35.  
  36.  \Quarterdeck             (folder name is longer than 8 characters)
  37.  \sys MR\MagnaRAM         (parent folder name contains a space)
  38.  
  39.  MagnaRAM can be installed in these folders:
  40.  
  41.  \sysutils\mr
  42.  \mr
  43.  \MagnaRAM                (the default, recommended folder)
  44.  
  45.  MagnaRAM AND 'QUICK START' PROGRAMS
  46.  ====================================
  47.  
  48.  Changes to Windows's Virtual Memory settings and MagnaRAM's
  49.  configuration typically require Windows to be restarted for the changes
  50.  to take effect. Programs that allow Windows to be exited and restarted
  51.  quickly may not take such changes into account. Generally, such
  52.  programs should be disabled before you make changes to Windows' Virtual
  53.  Memory settings or MagnaRAM's configuration.  After making your
  54.  changes, exit and restart Windows when prompted to do so, either by
  55.  using the Restart dialog box or the standard Windows exit procedures.
  56.  After you have restarted Windows, you may reactivate your quick restart
  57.  program.
  58.  
  59.  
  60.  IF YOUR SYSTEM LOCKS AFTER MagnaRAM IS INSTALLED
  61.  ================================================
  62.  
  63.  In the unlikely event that you experience a system failure after you
  64.  install MagnaRAM, you may wish to consider the following possibilities.
  65.  
  66.  The system can become unstable if the Windows swap file is located on
  67.  an area of your hard disk that is being compressed by a disk
  68.  compression program. (This is true even when MagnaRAM is not
  69.  installed.)  In general, you should either move your swap file to an
  70.  uncompressed section of your hard disk, or make sure there is plenty of
  71.  free disk space on the compressed drive that contains the swap file.
  72.  The swap file location is set via Windows Control Panel / 386 Enhanced
  73.  / Virtual Memory.
  74.  
  75.  Some programs expect to run in physical RAM, and can cause system
  76.  instability if they do not get the physical memory they expect. You can
  77.  sometimes work around this problem by decreasing the size of disk
  78.  caches, RAM disks, and other TSRs and drivers loaded before you start
  79.  Windows. It may also be possible to work around this problem by
  80.  decreasing the size of MagnaRAM's compression buffer, though MagnaRAM's
  81.  ability to create more Windows memory will decrease along with the size
  82.  of the buffer.
  83.  
  84.  If Windows does not start at all, and you suspect that MagnaRAM may be
  85.  involved, you can disable MagnaRAM by following this procedure.
  86.  
  87.  1) Start Windows 95 in Safe Mode.  To do this, reboot your system
  88.     and, when you see the message "Starting Windows 95", hold down the
  89.     F5 key.
  90.  
  91.  2) When Windows has finished loading, click on the Start button, then
  92.     on Settings, then Control Panel, then Add/Remove Programs.
  93.  
  94.  3) From the menu that is presented on this screen, select MagnaRAM.
  95.     This will remove MagnaRAM completely from your hard disk.  After
  96.     diagnosing and resolving the conflict, you may then re-install
  97.     MagnaRAM.
  98.  
  99.  IF YOUR SYSTEM SEEMS TO SLOW DOWN AFTER INSTALLING MagnaRAM
  100.  ===========================================================
  101.  
  102.  If your system seems to slow down after you have installed MangaRAM,
  103.  try decreasing the value of the PAGEOVERCOMMIT statement in MagnaRAM's
  104.  configuration. MagnaRAM generally sets PAGEOVERCOMMIT to a value of 8,
  105.  which is significantly higher than Windows 3.1's default value. It is
  106.  possible that the higher value will create more memory bookkeeping for
  107.  Windows and have an impact on performance. Try a PAGEOVERCOMMIT value
  108.  of 4 (Windows 3.1's default) and see if your system speeds up.
  109.  
  110.  You can also improve performance to a small extent by decreasing the
  111.  size of the MagnaRAM compression buffer, and increasing the minimum
  112.  compression threshold. In both cases, the cost of increased performance
  113.  is less data compression and less extra Windows memory.
  114.  
  115.  
  116.  IF MagnaRAM SEEMS TO HAVE NO EFFECT ON YOUR SYSTEM
  117.  ==================================================
  118.  
  119.  If MagnaRAM is installed and working on your system, you should see the 
  120.  MagnaRAM logo, with its expanding RAM chip, as Windows starts up. If you 
  121.  don't see this logo, try running the MagnaRAM installation program again.
  122.  
  123.  If MagnaRAM is installed, and the logo appears as you start Windows, check
  124.  the MagnaRAM Configuration screen to make sure that the Disable MagnaRAM 
  125.  Memory Compression box is cleared. If this box is selected, MagnaRAM will 
  126.  not compress memory on your system.
  127.

  129.  IF APPLICATIONS DO NOT HAVE ENOUGH MEMORY WITH MagnaRAM INSTALLED
  130.  =================================================================
  131.  
  132.  A very large program (for example, a CAD program) might require a huge
  133.  amount of memory before MagnaRAM's data compression even begins. Try
  134.  decreasing the size of the MagnaRAM compression buffer on the MagnaRAM
  135.  Configuration screen, or try increasing the size of your Windows
  136.  virtual memory swap file.
  137.  
  138.  ERRATA IN THE PRINTED DOCUMENTATION
  139.  ===================================
  140.  
  141.  The README file first identified on page 3 of the manual is named
  142.  README.TXT (the file you are reading now).
  143.  
  144.  The last paragraph on page 3 notes that MagnaRAM will appear under the
  145.  Start menu in Windows 95, under the name MagnaRAM 2 in the Programs
  146.  sub-menu.  The correct name is MagnaRAM.  All subsequent occurrences of
  147.  "MagnaRAM 2" should read "MagnaRAM" instead.
  148.  
  149.  On page 4, in the section "To uninstall MagnaRAM", the first step
  150.  suggests that you double-click on the MagnaRAM Uninstall item.  A
  151.  single click is all that is required.  Subsequent references to
  152.  double-clicking at any point in the Start menu or its submenus should
  153.  refer to a single click instead.
  154.  
  155.  On page 9, the acronym "RMA" should read "RAM" instead.
  156.  
  157.  The last paragraph on page 17 of the manual, which continues on page
  158.  18, contains incorrect information and should be ignored.
  159.  
  160.  The last paragraph on page 18 is similarly incorrect and should be
  161.  ignored.  MagnaRAM's installation does create a backup version of
  162.  WIN.INI and SYSTEM.INI, and places them in the directory into which you
  163.  installed MagnaRAM.
  164.  
  165.  The information on page 21, which notes the changes that MagnaRAM makes
  166.  to your system configuration, is incorrect.  MagnaRAM does not use a
  167.  .DLL for any of its services, but instead relies on a Windows Virtual
  168.  Device Driver (VxD).  The name of this VxD, and the method by which it
  169.  is loaded, depends on your version of Windows.  In Windows 3.1,
  170.  MagnaRAM is loaded by a line in the [386Enh] section of the Windows
  171.  SYSTEM.INI file:
  172.  
  173.  device=c:\magnaram\magna31.vxd
  174.  
  175.  In Windows 95, MagnaRAM's VxD is loaded via the Windows Registry,
  176.  under the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE entry in the path
  177.  
  178.  \System\CurrentControlSet\Services\VxD\Quarterdeck_MagnaRAM
  179.  
  180.  The Display_Compression parameter, described on page 22, is no longer a
  181.  MagnaRAM parameter.
  182.  
  183.  4K sections of memory, as referred to on page 26 are "pages", rather
  184.  than "+pages".
